Radiation Shielding began first as heavy-metal coatings along the hulls of spacecraft as they travelled from Earth to other locations in Sol System, primarily Mars, but later Venus. As Terraforming continued, and means were developed based on scientific research by the Japanese to create planetary magnetic fields, these fields were then adapted, as were ship designs to accommodate the new technology. While imperfect, when paired with heavy-metal coatings in the hull, these provided a means to protect humans from the varying radiations they encountered at subliminal travel around Sol, and later, as they branched out into The Fringe and eventually The Core worlds.
